Partner: ICRAF and Baoshan Forestry Department Duration: 2005 May to 2007 April
Objectives:
- Experiment with different models for improving monoculture forest stand areas.
- Select suitable trees for diversifying conifer forest areas.
- Extend successful models to different areas.
Methods:
- Initial assessment of sample plots.
- Improvement of forest composition through thinning, with a random distribution. Each plot will be one mu, and have three replicates with 15 treatments. A control plot will be designated in the same forest area.
- Strip thinning, using 8-meter wide strips with 30 meters between strips. Holes of 40กม40กม40cm will be dug with a plant and row spacing of 2กม3m.
- Planting of broad-leaf tree species in open clearings. Ten species of trees will be used. Each plot will be one mu, using three replicates with 16 treatments. A control plot will be designated in the same forest area.
Outputs:
- Comparison of research results.
- Evaluation of results for different plots.
- Selection of suitable cutting methods.
- Methods for improving and diversifying monoculture coniferous forest areas.
